Hiking France's Burgundy, Nolay to Santenay on The Voie des Vignes Veloroute (Oct 7, 2022)

After a two-year delay due to COVID, we made it to France for two weeks. Our original plan was to bicycle in the Loire River area, but a broken collarbone made us cancel the bicycling. Instead, we changed to the northeast part of France, the Alsace and Burgundy regions. This area had been on our radar for many reasons and it did not disappoint. We spent 6 days in the beautiful city of Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy region. For our second walk, we took the morning bus from the Beaune Train station (8:15am) to Nolay which was the end of the line for our bus route. For the low price of 1 Euro each, you can ride the bus, which is an easy way to get around the Burgundy area. We hiked from the Hotel de Ville in Nolay to the town center in Santenay, which was 7.2 miles of gradual downhill on the paved rails to trail. The walk was absolutely stunning with the fall colors in the vineyards. As a note, you could hike from Nolay in the other direction on the trail and see a Roman Aqueduct. We decided not to do that. After a wonderful lunch and a bottle of Santenay Chardonnay, we wandered around the village a bit and then caught the train back to Beaune (7 Euros each). This Veloroute makes for great walking and would also be a nice out and back on a bike.
