Of the pieces I know by Robert Jager, this is by far the strongest composition. It is interesting and its technical challenges are worthy. From the era when American band music was strongly influenced by Shostakovich, it's main motive is based on the trio of "Illinois Loyalty." It's quite hard to spot until the very end when it appears fairly simply as a hemiola in the brass instruments (11:30). This is posted as a tribute to the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble (PYWE) I led for three seasons in addition to the Philharmonic. These were our final performances before I handed the ensemble off to another fine conductor. The average age at the time of this concert was 15. This is the culmination of the Treasury of Scales routines I developed with them.
