"781. Rabbits in Forest" is a medium-level problem and the LeetCode daily challenge (POTD) for 20 April 2024. The solution, written in Java, is explained with a dry-run on a blackboard, making it accessible to viewers with diverse programming backgrounds by focusing on the logic rather than language-specific details. Intuition: Each rabbit gives us a hint about how many other rabbits share its color. When a rabbit says, for example, “2,” it means there could be up to 2 other rabbits with the same color — meaning a group of size 3. So, whenever we come across rabbits giving the same answer, we try to group them together accordingly. However, if more rabbits give the same answer than can fit in a single group of size answer + 1, we’re forced to start a new group. This ensures that every rabbit's statement holds true, and we don’t exceed the maximum implied by any individual answer. The goal is to account for all these groups in the most efficient way possible, while still staying honest to what the rabbits are telling us. By grouping the rabbits smartly based on their answers, and keeping track of how many full groups we need to form, we arrive at the minimum total number of rabbits in the forest — even if we didn’t hear from all of them directly.
