On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, United Way Women of Tocqueville presented a compelling webinar -- Philanthopy In Action: Leveraging Time, Talent, and Treasure to Improve Child Literacy. Our Guest Speakers: Malai Amfahr, Senior Program Officer, Constituency Outreach and Engagement Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Malai Amfahr Senior Program Officer with the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading. Malai has over 25 years of experience working in advocacy and community engagement in the nonprofit sector, primarily focused on youth. In her role as Senior Program Officer, she supports the CGLR community coalitions across the network with connection, coaching, and facilitated learning opportunities around CGLR’s shared agenda to ensure more hopeful futures for children. Prior to her role with CGLR, Malai was previously with United Way of Story County (UWSC) for 4+ years where she provided oversight of UWSC’s work in education, including leadership of Story County Reads, the CGLR community. She has served on several committees and non-profit board of directors focused on youth and philanthropy. Thomas Anderson, Superintendent, East Hartford Public Schools Thomas Anderson Superintendent of East Hartford Public Schools. A proud native of East Hartford, CT, he began his tenure as Superintendent on July 1, 2023. Before returning to his hometown, he served as Superintendent of Schools in New Bedford, MA, for five years and in Randolph, MA, for four years. His leadership experience also includes serving as an Assistant Superintendent in Washington, D.C., and as the founding Principal/Executive Director of a grades 7-12 charter school in Chicago’s Altgeld Gardens neighborhood. Mr. Anderson’s career in education began in Montgomery County Public Schools, Maryland’s largest district, where he taught high school English, coached track and field and cross-country, and held administrative roles as an assistant principal and principal at the high school level. Thomas has served on numerous boards throughout his professional life and currently serves as a board member for United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut. Ayeola Fortune Vice President, Impact Team of United Way Worldwide Ayeola provides oversight, strategic guidance, and support to team members managing key initiatives in education, economic mobility, and health. She leads UWW’s efforts to support local United Ways to integrate equity into their impact work by developing frameworks, strategies, peer learning and training opportunities, and developing resources and tools. She also helped lead the development of United Way’s education roadmaps which outlined the critical strategies, implementation approaches and potential roles that United Ways can play to improve educational outcomes, especially for at-risk youth, in their communities. Jan Turner, Women United Member and Incoming Women of Tocqueville Chair, Moderator Jan leads business development for Personal Insurance Direct Distribution at Travelers. A consistent advocate for women, family, education and the arts, she chairs Travelers Women & Allies Diversity Network and is a long-standing member of United Way Women United’s Leadership Council and the Connecticut Women’s Council. Jan served on the Finance Committee for the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut and on the Board of Directors of the Stamford Symphony Orchestra. She is a passionate artist, mindfulness practitioner, Associate Certified Coach and Integral Coach® who believes in the power of living and leading in alignment with one’s mind-body-heart-spirit.
