When I was growing up in West Wales and visiting friends at weekends, there was no television or computers. On Sundays, shops, pubs and petrol stations were closed, even homework was forbidden. After church in the morning, and a large lunch with a dozen or more people preparing, eating, chatting and clearing, everyone would settle down around the fire. We would learn and practise various crafts whilst someone read. Then we would go to church again, have supper and get ready for the week ahead. Happy times! I loved those afternoons around the hearth listening to the story, the wind and rain, with busy hands and surrounded by friends old and new.
