We went to visit Tracey and Mouse to hear their story. This is what Tracey told us: Mouse was dumped on a rubbish tip as a tiny puppy along with two of his siblings. The lady who found all three took them home but soon became concerned about Mouse as he seemed very unwell. Eventually, realising that he needed help, Mouse and his sisters were signed over to rescue and Mouse was rushed to the vets. He underwent lengthy investigations and eventually exploratory surgery. During the surgery, large amounts of plastic netting material was removed from Mouse’s stomach. Despite all of this, he did not respond to any treatment. He refused to eat or drink and had to be maintained on intravenous fluids. After a few more days Mouse was returned to the rescue with the advice that he would pass away soon after. Mouse was going to spend his last days in the comfort of a home, surrounded by love rather than being in a kennel at the vets. Three times over the next few days Mouse was booked in to be put to sleep as he refused to eat or drink but each time, something in his eyes said that he wasn’t ready to give up. I met Mouse at the rescue whilst I was volunteering, rebuilding my mental health following a breakdown that resulted in me walking away from a thirty-year career as a veterinary nurse. This tiny, frail puppy stole my heart, and I became one of the people fighting his corner. I sat with him day after day, willing him to eat. I was there on the 8th day of Mouse not eating or drinking when he took his first laps of water, there were a few tears shed. I offered to foster Mouse during his recovery. Caring for him helped to restore my belief in my ability to nurse, a feeling that I had completely lost and together we began to heal. Mouse is now a picture of health and my beloved sidekick. His physical scars have healed but the mental scars run deep but we continue to work our way through his many issues. Sadly, Mouse’s siblings Twiggy and Demi did not survive and for that reason Mouse will live the best life in their memory.
