Crete | how to get to Matala village and the beach. Matala beach is a secluded resort near the southernmost point of Crete, the preferred haunt for those who want no-frills beach combined with a sensation of remoteness. Its main feature is a low sandstone cliff riddled with caves that overlook the sea. These caves were part of the attraction Matala beach had for the world's hippies in the late 1960s and 1970s. For those of a more exploratory bent, there's a Minoan archaeological site to the south of the beach. Matala village is at the end of 75 kilometres of road from Heraklion. Drive for 53 kilometres along the main southbound highway, turning left at Mires.
