It was discovered that Trooper had a patent ductus arteriosus, a condition that causes irregular circulation and puts too much pressure on the heart leading to heart failure and most likely death by 2 years of age. With treatment, dogs with PDAs can live normal healthy lives with a usual life expectancy. Trooper had surgery where a surgeon made an incision through the thorax between his ribs and closed off the abnormal vessel. Dr. Wilcox helped to raise money for the surgery and has cared for the puppy both pre and post-surgery.
