Matt Mehalik, PhD The intensity of unconventional resource extraction in Pennsylvania provokes difficult choices for local community members. Access to scientific and health-related knowledge and information has been a central has been a high priority for supporting local community members. As petrochemical development matures, communities are learning more and are discovering new choices based on evolving science and health information for setting a community’s future direction. This presentation will offer an overview of some of these issues as well as some of the latest initiatives, tools, and campaigns that the Breathe Project, a collaborative involving over 50 organizations in SWPA, has developed to help support front line community members facing these challenges. Patricia DeMarco Local ordinances through zoning can limit fracking operations within the borders of communities. Actively restricting such operations from proximity to residences, schools and sensitive areas by zoning while adhering to the State and federal laws is within the purview of local governments in PA.
