Title: Co(labor)ation - Drawing-with complexity This creative workshop invites participants into an exploration of drawing as an act of co-labouring (Vintimilla & Berger, 2019); a pedagogical contact zone (Hamm & Boucher, 2017) where materials, children, environments, and ideas meet. We begin by noticing the assumptions many of us hold about drawing: the tendency to isolate marks, extract individual authorship, or search for the ‘child’s contribution’ as if it can be neatly separated from everything else. Instead, we propose that drawing is far more complex, relational, and world-making. Drawing-with children becomes an encounter shaped by situated improvisations, where materials and bodies move together in responsive, unfolding choreography (Pollitt, Kind, Delgado Vintimilla, & Blue, 2021). Children’s artmaking never happens in a vacuum; their gestures, marks, and imaginative leaps arise in entanglement with materials, weather, textures, histories, and more-than-human companions. Crediting children’s drawing as an act of worlding opens possibilities for decolonial pedagogies, where creation is recognised as a shared, situated process rather than the product of a lone ‘genius.’ Together, we experiment with drawing as a practice that resists separability, attends to the severed ties of connection, and honours the collaborative nature of creative thought. Participants will experience materials as active partners and explore how co-laboring with the world can shift how we see, support, and narrate children’s artistic and pedagogical lives.
