This is a quick inspection of the brood area in one of my Layens Hives. You'd think they would be way behind with the extended winter weather and recent rains along with cold temps. But no, the Layens colonies are building up nicely. it's rare for me to be ahead of swarming, as the first week of May usually has me hopping. This year, the weather has served to push the brood production back a tad. I think the greatest focus this spring will be on varroa mite reduction. I've found some unpleasant varroa mite numbers.
