Cologne Zoo has been conducting biodiversity research and conservation together with its many partners from Vietnam for years. This includes discovering new species, because you can only protect what you know, but also studying their ecology and population status in order to be able to initiate appropriate conservation measures once required. The activities of the German-Vietnamese team also include the establishment and development of stations to rescue confiscated animals as well as their keeping and breeding, restocking measures of threatened species, creating official protection status (IUCN Red List, CITES appendices) and work towards establishment of protected areas. All conservation activities in and together with Vietnam, also the topical conservation campaigns “Vietnamazing” and “Zoo Species of the Year – The Gecko“ are in agreement with IUCN’s ”One Plan Approach to Conservation” and the global “Reverse the Red” initiative.
