Enhancing protection for human rights defenders

The European Union invests considerable resources to protect those working on the frontline to pressure governments worldwide into respecting their human rights obligations. To this end, the EU adopted its guidelines for human rights defenders in 2004, and revised them in 2008 to establish a framework and tools for protecting human rights activists in countries outside the EU. In 2023, they are up for review again, as part of the EU Action Plan for Human Rights and Democracy.
