(23 Nov 2017) TONY SHALHOUB: STILL 'MONK' AFTER ALL THIS YEARS Tony Shalhoub's TV series "Monk" went off the air in 2009 after eight seasons, but the actor says he's still most recognized for his work as the show's title character, Adrian Monk, a detective with a major case of OCD.. "'Monk' was a bit of a game changer in terms of that recognition," said Shalhoub in a recent interview. "And because 'Monk' is one of those things that we didn't realize it at the time we were doing it, those eight seasons, but it spread – it's everywhere in the world almost. I can go – if I'm traveling I'm always shocked (by) the small corners of the world where people have been exposed to that. I guess that's a good thing." The actor recalls how "Monk" had a large following in Germany. "Oh my God. It was huge in Germany. It did well all over Europe but for some reason the Germans just went crazy for it. In fact, I believe - if I'm not mistaken - because I went to an event in Germany representing the show a few years ago and I believe the viewership was bigger there than it was even here. That's hard to imagine." He also says he was once recognized in a remote part of Iceland. "We had a family trip to Iceland and some parts of Iceland are really – we were in remote areas. I think I had like a week or two (beard) growth. I was in vacation mode and shockingly I was still recognized in this little town in Iceland. So, it's the power of television I guess." "Monk" was also a critical hit. Shalhoub won a Golden Globe, two Screen Actors Guild awards and three Primetime Emmy awards for his work on the series. Shalhoub is currently starring in his first Broadway musical called "The Band's Visit."
