Contributions of the Greeks Greek education has been divided into three periods: the Homeric period from 850 to 700 B C ; the earlier period from 6th century to the middle of the 5th century; and the later Period from the middle of 5th century to 3rd century BC. The aim of education is to develop individual excellence for public usefulness and for service of the state. In the early Athenian period, girls were brought up at home under the care of the mother or the nurse till the age of 7 . The girl continued her life at home and no provision was made for her education other than moral and domestic training which she received at home. The Athenian boys from 7 to 16 years of age received the training for harmonious physical (gymnastics) and moral development in a special school called palaestra and his intellectual education in the didascaletm . At the age of 16, he started attendance at a gymnasium with emphasis on the physical development. From 16 to 18 years he had his physical training in the public gymnasium. His moral and intellectual training was obtained through contact with the elder citizens. From 18 to 20 years he entered military service, and at 21 he became a citizen.)
