This song, and it's soulful melody, would probably be the most popular candidate for the title "Unofficial Anthem of Puerto Ricans Worldwide!" Of course such a title may never exist: nevertheless the Lamento (which I only heard for the first time in September 2010) seems to be the best known and most widely acknowledged and acclaimed masterpiece of the late great Borincano - Rafael Hernandez Marin (1892 - 1965) - El jibarito Inmortal ! José Feliciano does justice to this great composition with this rendition - released on his 2007 album "José Feliciano Y Amigos." A masterful performance in every sense. All pictures (and the sound material) used on in this videoclip are the property of their respective owners, not mine, and have been gathered from sources across the internet. The images are believed to be in the public domain, and I further believe that my use of all material here may be allowable under "fair use" concepts of international law. It is not my intention to infringe anyone's right to Intellectual Property: I'm merely seeking to promote greater awareness and exposure and acceptance of the diversity of music and culture, As an "outsider" I yet can identify with the sentiments of, in this particular case, the people who love Puerto Rico as their homeland. Songs of this genre exist among many peoples of the world - this one though happens to have a particularly beautiful lyric and melody. It will never grow old - not even when the yearnings of the jibaritos are fully satisfied, since it will always remain a beautiful song - and no one can ever change that. Also, it eternalizes a part of Puerto Rico's history and culture.
