The Tassili n'Ajjer is a mountain massif located in the centre of the Sahara, in south-east Algeria.🇩🇿 In 1982, the Tassili was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List and was classified as a World Biosphere Reserve as part of UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere programme in 1986.🌍🌴 The rock art of the Sahara is made up of numerous engravings and paintings, mainly concentrated in the Tassili n'Ajjer, and adorns rock shelters or walls protected from the wind, sand, sun and rain. There are 4 main styles of rock art: 🔸The ‘Kel Essuf’ style, known as the oldest style, depicting anthropomorphic beings, i.e. those who look like humans, and which have been dated to around 40,000 BC. 🔸The ‘round head’ style, characterised by a human silhouette whose face is generally represented by a circle without any lines, dated to around 10,000 BC. 🔸The ‘bovidian’ style, mostly depicting pastoral scenes and scenes of daily life, dated to around 6,000 BC. 🔸The ‘caballin’ style is distinguished by the motif of the chariot, driven by a rider and pulled by horses. The gradual desertification of the Sahara led to the disappearance of the pastoral societies that raised large cattle and horses there. The paintings were then replaced by camels, giving rise to the ‘camelin’ style, dated to around 2,000 BC. #tassilinajjer #saharaalgerien #desert #sahara #unesco #algeria #algerie #art #artrupestre #peinture #gravure #style
