Omer Plays Bass . . . Toto – Manuela Run (bass cover) Bass by David Hungate Bass Used in this Video: Dingwall Super PJ Hope you have a look and if you do, don’t forget to click 'Like" and subscribe to the channel The fact that Toto is one of my most favorite bands and David Hungate is one of my biggest bass playing influences and heroes is pretty well known on this channel, so not too much to rehash there. ‘Manuela Run’, off Toto’s debut album is a great song that is super well played by all with a kind of "south of the border" feel to it and is one of my favorites and maybe the most fun song the band has. Sung by David Paich with cool piano parts and equally cool synth parts by Steve Porcaro and tasty guitar riffs from Steve Lukather that is all held together with the rock solid groove that Jeff Porcaro lays down, I think the standout on this track is the fly-in vocal tags from Bobby Kimball doing what he does best in that upper register supported by great harmonies from the rest of the band. Not sure about the pseudo-English accent that Paich seems to like to sing a lot of songs in though, but hey he did write ‘Rosanna’ so he kind of gets to do whatever he wants. As usual, Hungate’s bass part just keeps the whole track moving and ties the whole thing together. Played with a pick, I find it to be a very Carol Kaye inspired part with lots of up-picking, slides into and muted notes. Hungate has that 70’s funk style so down (like ‘Lowdown’ by Boz Scaggs or ‘Georgy Porgy’ by Toto) but this style is a big part of his playing as well (like ‘The One That I Want’ from Grease). I did find an isolated bass track of this song (happy to say the track I did is almost identical or at least pretty close to the part he played) and it is so interesting to hear – with mistakes and perfection all included – and listen in on how they played it and how the part sounds - like the extra note in the break leading into the second chorus that I always found interesting – that shows how even for the greatest musicians out there, that the feel and groove of the track is more important than the perfect execution of every single note. This track definitely has that feel and groove that makes you go away feeling like you had fun listening to it, and for me, playing it. Disclaimer: I am not saying this is exactly how David Hungate played this song, but it is how I would play it if I was playing it at a gig.
