What is a cystoscopy and when is it used? It's important to learn about the variety of tools available in the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent or chronic bladder symptoms. A cystoscopy is a diagnostic tool which involves the insertion into the urethra of a thin tube which has a camera and a light on the end, in order to view parts of the urinary tract. A cystoscopy may be recommended if a clinician believes that ongoing urinary symptoms have an underlying cause beyond infection, or to rule out certain causes. Research shows that significant abnormalities are identified in 8-21% of cystoscopies and this can depend somewhat on the experience of the clinician performing it.
