Today’s video covers exercises to prevent an achilles tendon injury.The achilles tendon is a thick fibrous cord that attaches the ankle plantarflexors (calf muscles) to the heel bone (calcaneus). If this tendon is stressed beyond its capacity, such as with a forceful stretch or a powerful contraction, a tendon injury can occur. Achilles tendon injuries usually occurs when the ankle moves rapidly into dorsiflexion while the calf muscles are simultaneously performing a forceful eccentric contraction. This is the mechanism of injury that we witnessed in Monday night's NFL game. Aaron Rodgers stepped back, placing his ankle into end-range dorsiflexion, and then attempted to use his calf muscles to propel himself forward. Due to the fact that a player from the other team was in the process of tackling Aaron, his calf muscles had to exert even more force to move forward, which resulted in a failure of his achilles tendon. The exercises in this video can help keep your Achilles tendon strong and reduce the chances that you suffer an Achilles tendon injury.
