BRASS FROM THE PAST: European Double-Coiled Post Horn in the key of A. Very possibly French since the coat of arms on the bell has the “Fleur-de-lis” of France or possibly Switzerland. The 1831 stamp on the bell is probably a postal code and most likely not the date the horn was made. It was probably made in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Post horns were used on postal coaches and pulled by two horses. The coach driver would signal that the coach had arrived in town and he was posting the mail. Post horns were used in many European countries. Listen to sounds from the past. About 150 years ago more or less. Herman Koenig: “The Post Horn Galop”.
