How are Political Parties funded in India? | PanaceaTutor

In this video we analyse the process of Political Funding and Donations to several parties in India. How political parties earn money? Who pays political parties and the methods of doing so? Political Parties need access to money in order to reach out to the electorate, explain their policies and receive inputs from people. And in order to do the same, parties resort to political party funding. One of the primary sources of this funding is voluntary contributions made by individuals. Besides this, corporates pay hefty donations to parties in different forms. The BJP continues to get the lion’s share of donations among national parties, data from compliance reports for the 2020-21 financial year submitted to the Election Commission of India (ECI) shows. The reports reveal details of contributions greater than Rs 20,000, called ‘large donations’, from individuals and business houses. Donors from outside Delhi have been the biggest benefactors of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) since its launch in 2012, accounting for over 75 per cent of its donations, party documents show. Over the last seven years, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party, which is in power in Delhi, has received nearly Rs 185 crore in donations, with a high of Rs 54.14 crore in 2014-15 and low of Rs 2.02 crore in 2012-13.
