In this rare video, we see the red hot dynamic brake grids glowing from the heat generated during dynamic braking. Dynamic braking is used to slow down a freight train by turning the electric traction motors into generators. Since the traction motors are now generators, all the electricity has to go somewhere. The electricity goes into a grid bank where it is cooled by roof fans. The grid bank works exactly like the burner on a stove. The Milwaukee Railroad used to pump the excess electricity back into the system when it was running electric locomotives down grades. They said one train going down the hill would power another train going up the hill.
