In 2014, a mysterious sound was recored in the Mariana Trench. It was named biotwang because it sounded like it was a sound effect from a sci-fi movie. Researchers thought it could be from a baleen whale, but did not know which specific species. This year, researchers using AI published a paper that determined that Bryde's whales produced the biotwang call. The AI tool worked through thousands of hours of visual and acoustic data from the Mariana Archipelago, and matched the occurrence of biotwang sounds to the migration patterns of Bryde's whales, solving a decade long mystery. Allen AN, Harvey M, Harrell L, Wood M, Szesciorka AR, McCullough JLK and Oleson EM (2024) Bryde’s whales produce Biotwang calls, which occur seasonally in long-term acoustic recordings from the central and western North Pacific.
