In 2009, while in South India, I joined a researcher studying Wild Gaur, the world’s largest species of wild cattle. A herd was grazing nearby, giving us a rare chance to observe them up close as the researcher wanted to assess whether any where pregnant and how healthy the individuals were. One female seemed particularly relaxed, and I was fortunate to feel her breath on my face before she wandered off into the forest. Though the moment was peaceful, we were always aware of the potential danger. Gaur can be unpredictable, but my colleague’s extensive experience with these animals ensured both their welfare and our safety. The Gaur, native to South and Southeast Asia, can weigh up to 1.5 tonnes, with only rhinos, hippos, and elephants growing larger. Their massive size and dark coat make them a striking presence in the forest. Production Team: Kalyan Varma, David Heath & Mandanna Dilan.
