The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences is celebrating Pride Month, and are hosting a panel to hear the stories and experiences of LGBTQ+ students and professionals in STEM. We’ll hear from a panel of local students and professionals who will talk about their path to science and how they found success, and share their advice for others. Recent studies show that many students and academics in STEM fields who identify as LGBTQ+ do not come out to their colleagues, feel unsafe in their work environments, and experience harassment at higher rates than other individuals. This event aims to raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ people in STEM in North Carolina and celebrate diversity in STEM. The museum would like to thank their collaborating organization, 500 Queer Scientists, for their support. 500 Queer Scientists is a new campaign to raise the visibility of LGBTQ+ people in STEM professions. The campaign seeks to “Ensure the next STEM generation has LGBTQ+ role models; help the current generation recognize they’re not alone; create opportunities for community connections and greater visibility within STEM.” Thumbnail photo by Glenn Beltz, CC BY 2.0. https://flic.kr/p/J6L1fS
