(20 Sep 2000) Serbo-Croat/Nat XFA The Yugoslav army has said it will act against any "attempt for forcible takeover of power". The assertion came during an interview with top General Colonel Nebojsa Pavkovic, commander in charge of troops in Montenegro. With Yugoslav presidential elections on Sunday, the leadership in Belgrade is accusing Western powers and the opposition of plotting to overthrow Slobodan Milosevic. The government claims that the pro-western Montenegran police force has been inflitrated by "foreign spies" assigned to seize top government officials. General Col. Pavkovic said the army, loyal to Milosevic, was far more powerful than the Montenegran police, loyal to President Milo Djukanivic. Pavkovic said the army would not harm or pose a threat to voters or anyone involved in organising the elections. SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) "Naturally we have undertaken measures, having in mind the massing of troops around our borders, massing of the war ships in Mediterranean and Adriatic seas, military exercises in our neighbouring countries, and all this in order to scare the army and our people to put pressure ahead of the elections. In regards to all this, we have taken measures and we will stop any surprises no matter whether they like it or not." SUPER CAPTION: General Colonel Nebojsa Pavkovic, Yugoslav Army SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) "We think the army must help in organising federal elections. We are a federal intstitution. We get and take orders from the legally elected federal institution. We are not doing any harm to anyone participating in the elections, especially not to the voters." SUPER CAPTION: General Colonel Nebojsa Pavkovic, Yugoslav Army SOUNDBITE: (Serbian) "The army's role is to engage against the enemies. So if someone is calling for a conflict between the army and the Montenegran police, that is an unreal situation. Never can the police be stronger than the army and certainly not now. The army is an organised force. It has traditions, staff, equipment, possibility of manoeuvres both in the area and with firearms, unlike the police. They can say that there are thousands of them in the area but we know where they are and how they are deployed and what actions it can really take.
