Russia Marks Great Patriotic War Victory with Military Parade

Russia marked the 71st anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany with a grand military parade on Monday at Moscow’s Red Square. More than 10,000 troops and formations consisting of 135 items of military equipment including tanks and nuclear missile systems marched and rolled across the square from 10:00 Monday. Russia showcased its newest types of military equipment including the T-14 Armata, its new main battle tank, and the S-400 air-defense missile system. A formation consisting of 71 aircraft including strategic bombers, military transport aircraft and fighter jets flew over the square in the one-hour event. "Those who lost their lives in the war are commemorated through such an event. The war was a brutal one, but the Soviet Union claimed the final victory. The solidarity and unbending will our people showed during the war were the reasons why our country could claim the final victory," said Vladimir Semenov, a general in the Russian Army. The Russian Aerospace Forces, a newly established armed force that merges the Russian Air Force and the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces, also sent troops to take part in the parade. In an address ahead of the parade, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the history of war has proved that peace will not come by itself.
