A woman tries to survive. The world is in crisis: a global famine has affected people everywhere, leading to the collapse of society. Kate is a young woman on her own, broadcasting videos in the hopes of finding more information, reaching more people and finding help. Things become desperate, with Kate's vitals slowing down to dangerous levels. But then at her lowest point, Kate finds a way, learning to rely on others to survive. Directed and written by Lindsey Ruggles, this dystopian horror short imagines a world rife with famine as the result of ecological disaster as its starting point. But rather than focus on world-building and a wider sociological lens, the storytelling instead chooses to head a more penetrating, incisive psychological vein, examining how far someone will go to survive in an increasingly desperate situation with little hope on the horizon. The focus is on Kate, and for most of the film, she is the only presence on the screen, as she records videos of herself. Most are messages of outreach and appeals for help, but soon the videos chronicle her increasing weakness and feebleness in the wake of starvation. Sometimes cinematic storytelling can suffer from just focusing on a single character or conveying the story primarily through a character talking at a camera, but the film avoids this staticness with excellent, thoughtful and intelligent writing and performances. The few details the script offers about the world outside the screen are specific and evocative, and Kate's descent into desperation is well-calibrated to build suspense and tension as we watch her waste away over time. That process is captured with actor Sarah Nicole Deaver's performance. She has the engaging force and brightness that marks someone comfortable talking to cameras as a media figure or influencer, but that dynamism slowly ebbs away as food sources disappear. Near the end of her message, she and viewers believe all is lost. But then Kate returns, healthy and streaming from a new location. She issues a call that help is available for others where she is at, and will soon open it up to more people as soon as it is sustainable. But there's an even deeper horror at work, one that weaponizes the sheen and bright promise we know from social media to dark effect. It provokes dread and even shock once it's revealed what it is, and it makes HOW TO MEAL PREP DURING A FAMINE a truly subversive, provocative work that shows that true horror is not just the monsters out in the world, but the ones lurking in our internal depths.
