In humans, prolonged starvation can cause permanent organ damage and eventually, death. Educator explains the acute and chronic types of starvation. In chronic starvation, hypoproteinemia can lead to Edema, though this is rarely seen in forensic practice. This starvation Forensic lecture also explains the causes of Starvation which includes Famine, neglect on parts of parents, willful withholding of food, willful refusal of food etc. In famines it may be widespread, associated with other nutritional disorders such as kwashiorkor. Furthermore, effects of starvation of fetal period are discussed that how no food for a number of days can lead to death. Factors affecting fetal period are Age, sex, condition of body, temperature and physical exertion. Dehydration is a common feature, especially in infants and may be the major contribution to death. The skin is dry and wrinkled and, when pinched between the fingers, remains ridged because of loss of subcutaneous fat and fluid. Total deprivation of food will obviously kill faster than a severe reduction. Emaciation is of Dry type and Wet group. Other features of neglect and starvation are secondary to this nutritional deficiency, such as intercurrent infections, avitaminoses, skin disorders and nutritional oedema. Dehydration, hypothermia and actual necrosis of the extremities are the most severe manifestations that contribute to death.
