This is the Werribee St level crossing in Werribee, on the Warrnambool Railway line, with footage I took in December 2014, October 2017, January 2018, April 2018, May and July 2020. This crossing is on the Victorian government's list of level crossings to be removed. It is currently in the process of being grade separated, and is expected to be removed by 2022. Two Safetran Type-3 E-Bells. Both bells are programmed to sound continuously until the boom gates rise. Westinghouse cross-arms A mixture of marked and unmarked Westinghouse lights Four Safetran boom gate mechanisms, all with unmarked bases except for the signal on the north-western side, which has a Westinghouse base This crossing is the one of four non-metro crossing included in the governments list of 75 crossings to be removed (the other's being in Deer Park). 20,000 cars pass over this crossing everyday, and it is a very jumbled intersection, with three separate roads feeding onto it, making it quite a dangerous crossing. Traffic banks up a long way when the crossing activates, especially down Werribee St to the south. It was ranked the 7th most dangerous level crossing in Victoria, according to the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model from 2008 (as of September 2020, it is ranked the most dangerous level crossing in Victoria, since the six level crossings above it have been removed). Despite all this, it's inclusion on the list was controversial. After the Regional Rail Link opened in 2015, all V/Line trains travelling to Geelong and Warrnambool now bypass Werribee St, meaning only freight trains and the twice weekly Overland train pass through it (which has since been temporarily cancelled due to Covid-19). As a result, boom gates are only down for 5 minutes of the morning peak, making it one of the least busiest crossings to be removed. At the time of the announcement, many residents argued that the nearby Old Geelong Rd level crossing at Hoppers Crossing should have been prioritised first, as boom gates are down for 30 minutes of the morning peak at that crossing. However, it has since been included on the list of crossings to be removed. Regardless of the controversy, this crossing is still dangerous, so it's inclusion on the list for removal is understandable. My take on this is that while it's a less busy level crossing for trains, it's still a ridiculous crossing which needs to be removed This crossing was upgraded sometime between 2010 and 2014, with all new infrastructure installed on the whole crossing (including an extra two boom gate mechanisms, new bells, bases and LED lights). However, the south western signal was not, and it still has its original pole and Westinghouse base I had a LOT of trouble filming this crossing. I initially tried to film the Overland train passing through, which I DID get, but it was an hour late, so I failed to get it on cue. I then tried to film random freight trains passing through, without knowing when they'd come, which was NOT a good idea. I'm ashamed to say I visited this crossing on a few separate occasions waiting about an hour for a train to pass through, which sometimes didn't come. Luckily, I managed to film two freight trains on cue on my last visit there in July 2020, and I'm happy with the footage I got. Woohoo!
