Prinz Eugen survived nuclear fire—then became an environmental time bomb at Kwajalein Atoll. This documentary follows how Prinz Eugen endured Operation Crossroads (Test Able and Test Baker), was left contaminated for decades, and finally capsized on December 22, 1946, leaving fuel trapped inside an upside-down hull. But Prinz Eugen is not being raised. The physics of righting a capsized heavy cruiser in shallow water are prohibitive—so the mission is salvage by precision: recover the oil without spilling a drop. Divers face “inverted geometry,” limited bottom time near ~118 feet, and complex tank layouts designed to survive torpedo hits. The key technique is hot tapping—drilling into tanks while keeping every opening under control—then pumping out Bunker C heavy fuel oil so viscous it moves like cold molasses. As wing tanks run dry, the real challenge appears: inner-bottom tanks buried behind void spaces and steel. To reach them, the team deploys a custom Hot Tap Extension Tool, creating a sealed pipeline across the void to tap the inner tank safely. In the end, Prinz Eugen yields ~229,000 gallons, about 95% of the safely reachable oil, then the hull is sealed with permanent tamper-proof caps.
