It’s All I’ve Known was composed in 2025 to document the acoustics of the cooling towers of Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power station. During an initial visit to test the sounds her instrument could make in the cooling tower, composer/bass clarinetist Dr Sarah Watts was inspired by talking to the workers, and the sense of community at the power station. Many workers had spent their lives and careers there, and when the phrase ‘it’s all I’ve known’ was said, she knew that it should be the text for the composition. Dr Watts writes: As a Nottingham resident, currently living in Gotham, the power station is a landmark and a statement. It’s a sign I’m almost home, and like the workers - it’s all I’ve known. I wrote this poem as part of my composition process: It’s All I’ve Known I’m nearly home. Passing the vast cooling towers that dominate the landscape. Returning home from work a holiday, a day trip, from university. From Burton Joyce as a child, or Gotham as an adult, seeing, going past, getting off the train was a sign that I’m nearly home. Steam clouds on the horizon, lovingly providing Nottinghamshire with power. It’s all I’ve known, But, now silent, Now still, a past era, but for now still a sign, I’m nearly home. More than just a homecoming, For some it’s work, A lifetime of daily commutes, A career spanning years and decades. For many people, For many reasons, It’s more than a sign of home, For many people - ‘It’s all I’ve known’. This composition is for the family of workers over the generations that span the life of Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station, and the surrounding communities who have lived with the 8 cylindrical cathedrals.
