Stepping back and exploring the fascinating history of Australia through rare and stunning vintage photographs of Australia's state capital cities and many other lesser-known country and coastal townships. We dive into a time when transport links were being developed, exploring the customs, architecture and landscapes that helped develop the country we know today. A unique visual journey of Australia through the early lens. Sydney: Until the 1850s, Australian cities were small and their transport needs easily met. When gold was discovered in 1851, people began pouring into the country increasing the need for cheap and accessible transportation around its rapidly growing cities. Sydney's first form of public transport was most likely the 'jingle', a one-horse, single-axle cart available for public hire. Photography is a perfect medium to record the changing impact of technology and transport systems on cities over the past 160 years. More than 200,000 Sydneysiders commute to the city every day, including over 112,000 workers arriving by train. Approximately 480,000 vehicles travel through the Central Business District daily while 600,000 trips around the city are made on foot! Melbourne and Gold in Victoria By world standards, Melbourne is a young city but it has layers of history. Bluestone and concrete, paint and neon, Victorian-ornate and sheet-glass — all cram into the cross-hatched canyons that are Melbourne's streets and laneways. Immigrants leaving Britain in 1852 bought more tickets to Melbourne than to any other destination in the world. The new arrivals chased a single dream — gold. After the discovery of gold near Clunes in 1851, thousands arrived daily. Lodging houses and hotels were packed to bursting point and makeshift houses of iron, timber and canvas sprang up on the city's edge. Sudden wealth transformed a small port town into a frantic world centre: the wharves were constantly jammed with shipping, cargo and migrants disembarking. Society went wild with its new wealth. Although most would return from the goldfields penniless and exhausted, fantastic stories continued to offer hope of fortune. One of the greatest joys of travelling inland in Australia is discovering its charming country towns, with their heritage architecture, truly farm-to-table food and truly classic country hospitality. While Australia’s islands, beaches, coast and beach towns tend to get the most fame, many Australian country towns also deserve lots of credit.
