In this video, Greg talks about two things that consistently enhance a rider’s progress: freeing up the hindquarters and recording your rides to track improvement over time. Many of the issues riders experience—stiffness, resistance, heaviness in the reins, or lack of forward progress—appear physical. But they often begin in the horse’s mind. A mentally tight horse becomes physically braced. When the inside hind leg steps forward, smoothly and rhythmically, crossing in front of the outside hind leg, the body begins to organize. As the body organizes, the mind settles. This is what Greg refers to as movement into relaxation—not forcing softness, but allowing it through correct, purposeful movement. Under saddle, this work becomes even more important. If the hindquarters are restricted, the horse struggles to balance. When balance is compromised, brace follows. But when the hindquarters step through clearly and without hesitation, tension has somewhere to go. Recording your rides adds another layer of understanding. What riders feel and what is actually happening are often two different things. Video allows you to see: Whether the hind leg is truly stepping through If the rhythm stays even Where the brace is still present How your timing influences the outcome Over time, reviewing your rides makes progress measurable. Subtle improvements in softness, balance, and mental relaxation become visible. That clarity accelerates learning—for both horse and rider. Relaxation isn’t accidental. It has structure. When the horse can move, the mind can soften. When the rider can see clearly, improvement becomes intentional.
