An achievement that provided us with the experience required to develop the VSR700. This AFlight programme, developed in less than 18 months, enabled us to develop unmanned flight technology validated by an OPV (Optionally Piloted Vehicle) demonstration phase: the aircraft completed a series of tests involving the deployment of an external sling load in hover flight and an observation mission. Visibility during the unmanned flights was ensured by on-board cameras, which transmitted the images to the ground station. “Given the specific nature of this flight, keeping to the schedule was the main challenge of this project,” said Roland Gassenmayer, Innovation project lead. We had to test the entire system to ensure that the architecture was perfectly reliable. Other project challenges included key aspects like the autopilot or the choice of partners or suppliers.
