Dr Glenn McConell chats with legendary Australian former marathon world record holder and lifelong exerciser Derek Clayton and the three top researchers who have tested him over 50 years. Derek, who is now 82 years old, broke the marathon world record in 1967 running 2:09:36 when the previous record was 2:12:11(!). Then in 1969 he ran 2:08:33 a world record which wasn’t broken until 1981. He then continued to train at a high level, especially cycling. He was VO2 max tested in 1969 by Professor David Costill, 1991 by Professor Costill, Professor Mark Hargreaves and myself then in 2022 by sports cardiologist Dr Andre La Gerche and Prof Hargreaves. Each of these research experts have previously individually been on the podcast and join us today as part of this special podcast episode. Derek has developed atrial fibrillation but has an amazing heart with substantial cardiac reserve. I found this to be a very interesting and inspiring chat. Enjoy! 0:00. Introduction 2:40. Intro to Derek and his marathon world records 6:07. Started off in England/Northern Island playing soccer 7:50. Always driven, didn’t want any regrets 9:15. First signs of running talent at 19 in Belfast 12:50. Arrival in Melbourne, Australia 15:32. His training and introduction to the marathon 18:10. He only wanted to win, had no interest in pacing etc 19:30. His parents and talent etc. No coach. 22:20. Generally trained fast because slow was boring! 23:35. His huge training mileage 26:00. Worked full-time while training/racing 26:40. Accidentally ate high CHO diet/only water during races 27:44. Trained very hard and didn’t taper etc 28:50. Running injuries: knee replacement. End of running 30:48. Legendary researcher Prof David Costill joins in! 32:10. How David originally hooked up with Derek 36:58. Derek’s VO2 max etc testing in 1969 41:00. Top researcher Prof Mark Hargreaves joins in! 42:20. Derek’s 1991 VO2 max etc testing 46:30. Derek’s VO2 max similar in 1969 and 1991! 47:35. Derek’s slow vs fast twitch fibre content 49:20. Competitive even about his hand grip 50:20. Derek and Frank Shorter didn’t have that high VO2 max 52:20. Derek was very efficient 55:30. Resilience, mental attitude, tolerating hard work 57:50. Derek very modest 58:50. Took up serious bike racing 1:01:05. Derek’s Olympic marathon races 1:03:00. Issues at Olympics with altitude and heat 1:05:10. Top sports cardiologist Dr Andre La Gerche joins in 1:09:03. Derek’s heart is enormous 1:11:20. Endurance training increases the right more than the left ventricle 1:12:25. Derek has very large atria but reduced function 1:16:20. Right ventricle and endurance exercise 1:18:30. Derek’s atrial fibrillation and exercise 1:25:52. Derek’s ablations to try to prevent his AF 1:30:50. Alcohol, AF and ablations 1:32:20. Derek has had 3 ablations but still has AF 1:34:20. The heart can take time to recover from high intensity exercise 1:37:20. Right ventricle and exercise drops in arterial oxygen 1:40:55. Derek has enormous cardiac reverse 1:46:35. Lifelong exercise increases AF 1:51:50. Exercise is extremely important despite increasing AF 1:55:20. Prioritize/best treatment exercise 1:59:12.
