Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, the fort was originally named Sudarshangarh. Its primary purpose was to protect the newly built city from invasions. However, history soon took a mysterious turn. During construction, repeated structural failures baffled the workers. It was believed that the land was haunted by the spirit of Nahar Singh Bhomia, a Rathore prince whose soul was disturbed by the fort’s construction. To appease the spirit, a temple was built inside the fort in his name, after which construction finally succeeded. From then on, the fort came to be known as Nahargarh — meaning “Abode of Tigers.” Though Nahargarh never faced a direct battle, it played a crucial role in the defense strategy of Jaipur, forming a strong triangular defense along with Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the fort sheltered European residents of the region, highlighting its strategic importance.Beyond its military past, Nahargarh reveals a softer, royal side. The Madhavendra Bhawan, built by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh, consists of twelve identical suites for the queens, connected by elegant corridors — a symbol of architectural brilliance and royal lifestyle. Each room tells a story of privacy, power, and palace politics. As the sun sets, Nahargarh transforms into one of Jaipur’s most magical viewpoints. The city lights sparkle below, narrating centuries of change — from royal processions to modern streets — all under the fort’s watchful gaze.
