Even as Sharif and Vajpayee held talks, Pakistan's army was infiltrating the hills of Kargil in Ladakh. This betrayal ended hopes of peace between India and Pakistan. Sharif's rival Imran Khan also trained his guns at former military ruler Yahya Khan who presided over Pakistan's division into Bangladesh.
