‘No Kings’ Protest Movement Reaches the Mississippi Delta

GREENVILLE, Miss. — Nationwide protests drew large crowds in major cities this weekend as demonstrators marched under the banner “No Kings,” calling for the protection of democracy. Smaller gatherings also began to emerge in new areas across the country — including one in the Mississippi Delta. The Greenville rally opened with a prayer and featured several speakers, including Tarsha Parker of the NAACP. “We’re fighting for the very thing that this nation was built on — that’s democracy,” Parker said. Parker emphasized the importance of unity, warning that staying silent could lead to dictatorship. “If there’s going to be any kings in Greenville, Mississippi, if it’s not Martin Luther King, if it’s not B.B. King, if we’re not building Black kings, then we don’t want no kings,” said Patrick Lumumba of Tate County. Protesters voiced outrage over former President Donald Trump’s policies, citing what they called threats to democracy, immigration raids and the deployment of troops to U.S. cities. “We in the Mississippi Delta understand that what he’s doing right now will affect not only the inner cities but places like the Deep South,” said Malik Haynes of Greenville. With the ongoing government shutdown leaving many without pay, protesters said they were frustrated that lawmakers continued to receive salaries — widening what they described as an economic divide. “If people don’t understand what an oligarch is, it’s ruled by a specific group of high, elitist people,” Lumumba said. Calls for systemic change from Greenville echoed the broader national movement. “We plan to resist Donald Trump’s dictatorship by doing what we’ve been doing — and that’s building up our communities from the ground up, what we call grassroots,” Haynes said.
