(30 Jul 2018) Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen was back at work on Monday morning, hours after his Cambodian People's Party claimed a landslide victory in the general election. The 65 year old, who has been Premier for 33 years, looked delighted as he was warmly congratulated on his win by a visiting foreign delegation. He met with Anton Caragea, who headed two little-known observer groups who helped give the much-criticised election a veneer of legitimacy. Caragea has often praised Hun Sen in the past, calling him a "paragon of development" and hailing his "tireless dedication for the well-being" of the people. He was also appointed a goodwill ambassador for the kingdom, in 2016, to promote its historical and cultural heritage. The election is widely considered illegitimate after the only credible opposition was silenced and which ensures that long-ruling Prime Minister Hun Sen will serve another five-year term. Although 20 parties contested the election, the only one with the popularity and organization to mount a real challenge, the Cambodian National Rescue Party, was dissolved last year by the Supreme Court in a ruling generally seen as political.
