During the Dutch Golden Age (era from 1588 to 1672) the city was, after Holland's metropolis Amsterdam, the most important center for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) Middelburg has preserved much of its historic character. There are 17th and 18th century merchant houses and other buildings such as an 11th century old Abbey.
