Day 3 of my motocamping trip across Colorado and into the eastern edge of Utah. The day included riding from my camping spot on the western edge of Colorado into Utah to explore the Moab area. Roads included Hwy 128 that takes you through an amazing canyon carved by the Colorado River on your way to Moab. But the real fun was the offroad riding on Onion Creek Trail and Shafer Canyon Trail. Riding these with a loaded-down adventure bike was a good challenge at times, but overall pretty manageable. Potash Road takes you from Moab into the back country of Canyonlands National Park, where the road becomes the Shafer Trail as it creeps up the side of the canyon walls to the top of the Island in the Sky plateau in Canyonlands. I really think this road was the most scenic and exciting road I have ever ridden. You climb around 2000 feet in elevation from Moab up to the top and the road is somewhat technical at times for a heavy bike. Finally, camping at Utah Open Lands Castleton Tower Preserve was absolutely beautiful and a great location to enjoy the desert landscape. Camping is free and the sites are scattered just beyond a central parking area. The campground provides ample space between tent sites and has vegetation that provides nice separation between the sites. Check out the video for days 1 and 2, and the soon-to-come day 4 video.
