Lake Tarpon in Pinellas County, Florida has a history that includes development, natural areas, and recreational use.  Development  In 1882, Hamilton Disston, a wealthy saw manufacturer, visited the area and decided to develop the land into Tarpon Springs. The town was named after the tarpon fish, which was abundant in the area in the late 19th century. The Orange Belt Railway arrived in Tarpon Springs in 1887. Natural areas The Lake Tarpon Management Area is a natural area east of Lake Tarpon that's closed to the public.  Lake Tarpon in Pinellas County, Florida hosts bass tournaments on most weekends. The lake is known for its largemouth bass, and some say it's one of the best sport fishing lakes in the state.  The area includes a cypress dome swamp, which is a freshwater community that grows in a roughly circular shape.
