Bangladesh is currently reeling under widespread violence, with radical Islamist mob attacking national symbols, public property, media houses, and Indian missions. The violence was triggered after the death on Thursday of youth leader Sharif Osman Hadi — a radical who was shot by masked men in Dhaka last Friday and had since been undergoing treatment in Singapore. Known for his anti-India rhetoric, Hadi had once advocated for creating 'Greater Bangladesh' — with present-day Bangladesh as well India's Northeast. His supporters blamed India for the attack — an allegation unfounded in facts. Since his death, the offices of two major media houses in Dhaka, Prothom Alo and Daily Star, have been completely ransacked and torched. The residence of Sheikh Mujibur Raham — the founder of Bangladesh and the father of ousted PM Sheikh Hasina — has yet again been torched by a mob. Meanwhile, caretaker Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus blamed Hasina's supporters for the violence. At least one lynching of a minority Hindu man has also been confirmed this week.
