This lesson is about demonstrating the power of music theory. This power is show cased through harmony or harmonization. A fancy word for putting chords and melody together. Here's the basic idea. You can put any chord with a melody note, as long as the melody note is contained within the chord. That's it....easy right? Here's an example of how it works. Let's say you have a G note in the melody. G can be the 1st, third or fifth of the chord you choose to harmonize with. If G is the root of the chord, then a G chord is the harmonizing the G note. If the G note is the 3rd of the chord, then the harmonizing chord is an Eb (Eb-G-Bb). Count three notes backwards in the musical alphabet to arrive at the 3rd. G-F-Eb. If G is the 5th of the chord, count five notes backwards: G-F-E-D-C and you arrive at a C chord. Easy peasy! I'm using some more advanced harmony in this video. Harmonies that don't just rely on 1st, 3rd and 5th. The melody note can also be 7th, 9th, 11th or 13th of a chord. The extreme power in being aware of harmony is undeniable. It can help you be much more creative and source sounds you would've never come across by accident. Twinkle twinkle little star is my reharmonization victim for this demonstration.
