What's it like, as an actor, to be a part of a TV show so big, it changes the trajectory of television completely? It’s probably a very cool experience, but it’s also very likely that that show will define you as an actor. Christina Hendricks was on one of those shows. She played Joan Harris, the office manager turned eventual ad executive on the hit series Mad Men. For her work on the show, Hendricks received two SAG awards, two Critics Choice awards and six Emmy nominations. So what comes next? Since Mad Men, Christina Hendricks has thought about it a lot. She was super-picky about her parts. Now, she's found her groove. She starred alongside the great Michael K. Williams on the TV drama Hap & Leonard, had a great run on the NBC show Good Girls alongside Retta and Mae Whitman. And now, you can catch her in the Hulu series Good American Family. Christina Hendrick joins us to talk about Good American Family and she’s navigated being part of such an intense show. She also chats with us about her time as a model and a ballet dancer, and what life's been like after Mad Men. 00:00 Intro 00:33 Good American Family 01:00 Story From The Headlines 02:37 Dancing and Modeling 04:22 Moving to Los Angeles 05:49 Moving a Lot 06:54 The Appeal of Dancing & Theater 07:36 Making Yourself Vulnerable 08:43 Dance Injury 10:00 Being A Young Goth 11:10 Becoming A Model 12:14 Mom Crying at Early Modeling Photos 13:55 Being On Your Own 17:14 Rejection with Dancing/Modeling vs Acting 18:05 Handling Direct Feedback 20:13 Hair Color 20:30 Women in The Industry & Hair Color 22:10 Red Hair & Cultural Baggage 22:28 Success & Being an Actor 23:20 Mad Men at The Beginning 23:52 Auditions for Mad Men 25:30 Stepping into The World of Mad Men 26:45 Aesthetics of Mad Men 28:10 Humanity in Madmen 29:13 Being Your Character 30:03 Characters vs Reality 31:16 Women in Mad Men 32:59 Prestige Television 34:41 Being Received as a "Hunk/Babe" 36:58 The End of Mad Men 38:33 Being in The Middle of Your Career 39:16 Outro Want to hear more?
