This Ridler Award–winning 1937 Ford 5-Window “Aero Coupe” Custom Hot Rod is one of the most historically significant and recognizable vehicles in the history of American hot rodding. Offered from the MS CLASSIC CARS Collection, this iconic build represents the absolute pinnacle of 1990s high-end custom car design, engineering, and craftsmanship. Built by Fred Warren and Tim Novick of Warren Motorsports, with major contributions from Boyd Coddington and the legendary Hot Rods by Boyd team, this car redefined what was possible on a 1937 Ford 5-Window Coupe platform. The chassis, suspension, and fabrication showcase the elite level of innovation that helped establish the “smooth” hot rod movement of the 1990s. This masterpiece earned The Ridler Award, the most prestigious honor in the indoor custom car world, presented annually at the Detroit Autorama. Power comes from an extremely rare Hawks 406 polished aluminum V8, built by renowned designer John Buttera in collaboration with Mr. Gasket. Originally designed for ISCA Sprint Cars, this engine was dyno tested at approximately 420 horsepower and remains one of the most visually striking and mechanically exotic V8s ever installed in a street-driven hot rod. The car debuted in 1994 and was featured on the cover of Street Rodder Magazine, instantly becoming a benchmark build. It later earned the Al Slonaker Memorial Award at the Grand National Roadster Show in 1997 and was recently showcased on Bitchin' Rides, further cementing its legendary status in hot rodding culture. Starting life as a rust-free original steel 1937 Ford coupe from Pennsylvania, the body was completely redesigned using CAD (Computer-Aided Design)—an advanced process at the time. The roof was chopped and lengthened, the hood extended, the rear body shortened, and the wheelbase stretched to 120 inches. Custom suicide doors, widened rear quarters, and aerodynamic aluminum panels define the car’s unmistakable silhouette. Finished in Electric Blue, the show-quality paint delivers a mirror-like finish that perfectly captures the smooth, minimalist aesthetic of the era. The interior is equally dramatic, blending luxury with function. Upholstered in Dark Tan leather, the cabin features a custom stair-step dash, integrated electric gauges, billet aluminum controls, power windows, electric door releases, and German wool square-weave carpeting. Every surface was designed to flow with the exterior body lines, creating a cohesive, sculptural interior environment rarely achieved in custom hot rods. Under the hood, the Hawks 406 V8 is surrounded by a fully smoothed engine bay, removable side panels, custom billet accessories, ceramic-coated headers, and a polished exhaust system exiting beneath the rear end. The engine is paired with a polished Turbo 350 automatic transmission, sending power to a fully polished modern Corvette-style POSI rear end. The undercarriage is as refined as the top side, featuring a fully custom Boyd Coddington–built chassis, independent front and rear suspension machined from aircraft-grade aluminum, coilover shocks, and power four-wheel disc brakes. This car has long been displayed with mirrors and lighting beneath it, highlighting the extraordinary craftsmanship throughout. Few vehicles in existence can claim this level of pedigree, documentation, awards, media exposure, and historical importance. This 1937 Ford 5-Window “Aero Coupe” Ridler Award winner is more than a custom hot rod—it is a defining piece of American automotive history, proudly offered by MS CLASSIC CARS.
