The Blueprint Podcast conversation Rudy Coombs 100 Black Men of New York - Join Us Rudy Coombs was born i n the South Bronx to Jamaican immigrant parents. He received a basketball scholarship to attend Paine College in Augusta Ga. and graduated with a degree in Sociology in 1976. He joined the U.S. Army after completing college and served four years of duty receiving an honorable discharge with numerous medals. At a young age of just twenty years old, he was arrested for a crime he did not commit and was looking at 15 to 25 years in prison, but only by the grace of God a t his sentencing, he was found innocent. This helped him with what his passion is still today, advocating for underprivileged youths and underserved communities that have no voice. In 1994, after searching for influential men to be his mentors, Rudy joined the organization of One Hundred Black Men Inc., which was a turning point in his life after the Million Man March. He became instrumental in the organization's adopting of his high school alma mater, Theodore Roosevelt in the Bronx in 1996, which was on the state's list to be closed. He initiated the speaker's bureau program there, which started a network between Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, New York Giants, NY politicians, NY educators and the Bronx Community, which became one of the catalysts for the idea of OHBM founding the 1st. Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx in 2004, of which there are now six in each borough of New York City including one in Newark, N.J. He has received numerous awards too many to mention here, but two that stands out and needs t o b e mentioned, the scholarship he received from OHBM to work on his master's degree, which he received in 2005 from New School University i n Manhattan, and the United States Postal Service Highest National Award for Altruism, which he received in 2004. He i s also on the board of directors for the Youth Shelter Program of Westchester Inc now for over thirty years, a n alternative for incarceration for young men ages 19 to 25. He i s also one of the original board founders of the Bronx Basketball Hall of Fame. He retired from the USPS as a manager in 2008 and is a thirty-two-year member of OHBM and has been currently on the board of directors for thirty years. He has three children, Latisha, Colleen, and Devon, all following i n his successful footsteps and six grandchildren. Rudy has been motivated and inspired by a Black woman, Shirley Chisholm, the civil rights icon, who's words he lives by unbought and unbossed, which she also wrote a book on.
