Fishing ponds should have a minimum of 25% of the area covered in habitat. Level barren areas will be a ghost town in your pond. To ensure you give your fish a chance to reproduce and recruit successfully each year, you have to properly plan and lay out your various structures in different depths to support the lifecycle of the fish from providing a place with ample spawning substrate to increase the hatch rate, and then enough structure and habitat for the fry to hide in to find shelter from the predators so that a good percentage of your fish can grow to maturity and to catchable size. The more time and effort you put into setting up the fishing ecosystem up front, the less money you'll have to pump into the pond with subsequent stockings.
